How to Use the Instagram Character Counter
- Type or paste your caption into the box. The count updates in real time, no button to press.
- Watch the grey-out point at character 125, that's exactly where a feed viewer sees "...more" and has to tap to keep reading.
- Check the hashtag counter below the caption. It's counting your caption and comment fields together against the real 5-tag cap.
- Fill in the rest, bio, username, display name, comment, DM, or alt text, each tracked against its own real Instagram limit.
Instagram Now Caps You at 5 Hashtags, Not 30
Most character counter tools online are running on stale data. Here's what actually changed, and what else is worth knowing about Instagram's real limits.
Instagram cut hashtags from 30 to 5 in December 2025. Adam Mosseri confirmed the change, and it's been corroborated across multiple outlets since. If you're still planning posts around "use all 30 tags," that advice is now nearly a year out of date and won't help your reach the way it used to.
The 5-tag cap counts caption and comments together. This is the part that trips people up. Hiding extra hashtags in your first comment used to work as a workaround to the old 30-tag limit. Now, every hashtag anywhere on the post, caption or comments, draws from the same pool of 5.
Front-load your caption's first 125 characters. That's all a feed viewer sees before they have to tap "...more," so your hook, offer, or question needs to land inside that window, not after it.
Your username and display name are separate 30-character fields. No one else on the platform can hold your exact @handle, and changing it casually can break old links people saved or shared. Your display name (the bold text above your handle) can include spaces and gets refreshed more freely, so put your brand's real name there and keep the handle simple.
Alt text isn't a hard limit, it's a recommendation. Instagram doesn't cut you off at a specific character count for alt text the way it does for captions or bios, but shorter, more literal descriptions (under about 100 characters) tend to work better for accessibility than long, keyword-stuffed ones.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram now?
Five. Instagram capped hashtags at 5 per post in December 2025, down from the old 30-tag allowance. Most character counter tools online still show the outdated 30-tag limit, so double-check where your source is getting that number from.
Do hashtags in my caption and comments count separately?
No, and this is the part most people get wrong. Your 5-hashtag limit counts across your caption and your comments combined. The old trick of dumping extra tags into the first comment to keep your caption clean no longer gets you more hashtags, it just eats into the same 5.
How many characters show before "...more" on an Instagram caption?
125 characters. Anything past that gets hidden behind a tap in the feed, which is why your first sentence or two carries the most weight. The counter above greys out exactly what gets cut off, live, as you type.
What's the Instagram bio character limit?
150 characters, and that includes spaces and line breaks. It's tight, so most brands use it for a one-line pitch plus a link rather than a full paragraph.
Is there a character limit on Instagram DMs?
Yes, 1,000 characters per message. If you're writing something longer for outreach or customer support, you'll need to split it across a couple of messages.
Is this Instagram character counter free to use?
Yes, completely free with no signup, no account, and no ads on the page. It's used by 2,500+ marketers in the MarketersClique community.
