How to Calculate Twitter Engagement Rate

X (Twitter) engagement rate measures how many people reacted to a post out of everyone who could have. There are two common ways to calculate it, and they answer different questions.

By impressions: ER% = ((Likes + Replies + Reposts + Quotes) ÷ Impressions) × 100

By followers: ER% = ((Likes + Replies + Reposts + Quotes) ÷ Followers) × 100

Worked example: a post with 90 likes, 12 replies, 15 reposts, and 3 quotes has 120 engagements. On 12,000 impressions that's 1%. On 5,000 followers it's 2.4%.

The impressions method is what X's own analytics uses, but impressions are private. You can see them for your own posts and nobody else's. That's why a tool that claims to check any account's rate can't be using impressions. Follower count is public, so the follower method works for any account, and it matches how our Instagram and TikTok calculators work. Use impressions for your own reporting and followers for sizing up a competitor.

What Is a Good Engagement Rate on X (Twitter) in 2026?

Start with the honest industry number. The Quid/Rival IQ 2026 Social Media Industry Benchmark Report puts the median engagement rate per X post at 0.03% of followers, up from 0.015% the year before. Metricool reports a similar 0.029%. These are follower-based medians across every industry and account size, so they include large, quiet brand accounts. Don't mix them with impressions-based numbers.

Many creators aim higher than the median for their own size. This table is a common way creators size up their own tier. It's one working framework from Xholic, not an official industry study, so treat it as a rough guide.

10K-100K1%+2%+4%+
100K-1M0.6%+1.25%+2.5%+
1M+0.3%+0.75%+1.5%+

Notice how far apart the median and these targets sit. That gap is normal. The median averages in every inactive and brand account, while the tiers describe an engaged creator account. Your best comparison is always your own recent posts.

What Counts as Engagement on X

This calculator counts four actions: likes, replies, reposts, and quotes. X Analytics also tracks bookmarks, link clicks, profile visits, and media views. Most calculators leave those out, and so does this one, which keeps results comparable between tools. If you add them to your own numbers, your rate will run higher than a standard one, so note what you included whenever you report a figure. Replies are the strongest signal of the four, since they take the most effort and tell the algorithm people are talking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate X (Twitter) engagement rate?

Add up the likes, replies, reposts, and quotes on a post, divide by impressions or followers, then multiply by 100. If a post has 90 likes, 12 replies, 15 reposts, and 3 quotes on 12,000 impressions, that's 120 ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 1%. The calculator above does it for either method.

What's a good X engagement rate in 2026?

The industry-wide median is 0.03% of followers per post, according to the Quid/Rival IQ 2026 benchmark report, up from 0.015% the year before. Creators often use tighter, size-based targets for their own accounts, like 1% to 2% for 10K to 100K followers. Those tiers are one creator framework, not an official study.

Does engagement rate use impressions or followers?

Both are used, and they aren't interchangeable. To calculate Twitter engagement rate the way X's own analytics does, divide by impressions, but only you can see impressions on your own posts. Followers are public, so a follower-based rate works for any account. Pick one method and stick with it when comparing.

Why is X's average engagement rate so much lower than Instagram's?

It's how the platform works, not a flaw in your account. X is a fast, text-heavy feed where most people read without reacting, and a large share of followers are inactive or never see a given post. The median also blends in huge brand accounts. Instagram's feed is more visual and more focused on followers, so rates run higher. Compare yourself to X benchmarks, not Instagram's.

What counts as an "engagement" on X?

This calculator counts likes, replies, reposts, and quotes. Bookmarks and link clicks are not counted here, and most calculators leave them out too, even though X Analytics can show them separately. If you include extra actions, your rate will come out higher than someone else's.

Is this X engagement rate calculator free to use?

Yes, completely free with no signup. Calculate as many posts as you like. It's used by 2,500+ marketers in the MarketersClique community.
